The quick read on Alaska registered agents

Every Alaska LLC is legally required to maintain a registered agent with a physical street address in the state. The role is to receive service of process (lawsuit papers), state tax notices, and other official government mail on the LLC's behalf. You can serve as your own agent if you live in Alaska and meet the requirements, or hire a commercial service for typically $99 to $299 per year.

Alaska-specific rules matter. The statute is AS § 10.50.055 and AS § 10.06.170. The registered agent's address goes on the public state record, so most owners who want privacy use a paid service to keep their home address off the record. Owners who live in the state and don't mind the public listing often save $100 to $250 per year by serving as their own agent.

Who can serve as a registered agent in Alaska

Alaska allows an individual Alaska resident at least 18 years old with a physical Alaska street address, or a domestic or foreign entity authorized to transact business in Alaska, to serve as registered agent. The registered office must be a street address. PO boxes and mail-drop services do not qualify under AS § 10.50.055.

Alaska does not maintain a commercial registered agent registry, so any qualifying person or entity can serve without separate registration. The LLC's own member or manager can serve if they meet the residency rule. See our Alaska LLC formation guide for context on the rest of the setup.

What Alaska requires of a registered agent

  1. Physical street address in Alaska

Not a PO box, not a mail-drop. The address becomes part of the public record visible on the Secretary of State's business entity search.

  2. Available during business hours

Typically 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. The agent has to be physically present (or have staff present) to accept service, not just reachable by phone or email.

  3. At least 18 years old and a resident or registered entity

Individual agents must be 18+ and reside in Alaska. Entity agents must be registered to transact business in Alaska.

  4. Written consent on file

Alaska requires the registered agent to consent in writing to serve. Formation services handle this automatically when you sign up. For an individual agent, a simple signed consent letter suffices.

Choosing the right registered agent in Alaska

If you live in Alaska and run your LLC from a fixed address, self-serving saves $100 to $250 per year. The tradeoff is that your home address goes on the public Division of Corporations record, and Alaska's small population makes that exposure more personal than in a state like California. You also need to be reachable at that address during business hours.

For non-Alaska residents, a commercial service is the only path. Pricing runs $99 to $149 per year for the major national services (Bizee, Northwest, ZenBusiness). Alaska's registered agent market is thinner than the Lower 48, so local-only boutiques are rare and national services are the default. Keep in mind Alaska's biennial report ($100, due every two years by January 2) runs on a different cadence from the RA, so compliance dashboards that only track annual deadlines sometimes miss the Alaska cycle.

If you let your Alaska registered agent lapse

Under AS § 10.50.560, the Alaska Division of Corporations can involuntarily dissolve an LLC that fails to maintain a registered agent for 60 days. Reinstatement requires filing an Application for Reinstatement with a $100 fee plus any unpaid biennial report fees ($100 per cycle). Because Alaska's report cycle is two years, LLCs that lapsed through multiple cycles can owe $200 or more in back-fees before reinstatement completes. The LLC's name protection may lapse during the dissolved period.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who can serve as a registered agent for an Alaska LLC?

An individual Alaska resident at least 18 years old with a physical Alaska street address, or a domestic or foreign entity authorized to transact business in Alaska. PO boxes are not allowed for the registered office. The agent must be available during business hours to accept service of process. The LLC's own member or manager can serve if they meet the residency rule.

  • How much does an Alaska registered agent service cost?

National services price between $99 and $149 per year (Bizee $119, Northwest $125, ZenBusiness $99 first year). Alaska's local RA market is small, so most filers use a national option. The $125 tier is the most common choice because Northwest includes mail scanning and compliance reminders. LegalZoom charges $249 per year without meaningfully better service.

  • Can I be my own registered agent in Alaska?

Yes, if you're an Alaska resident at least 18 years old with a physical Alaska street address and availability during business hours. Your home address becomes public on the Division of Corporations record. Given Alaska's smaller population, that exposure can feel more personal than in larger states. Frequent travel or remote work usually rules out self-serving.

  • What does it cost to change my Alaska registered agent?

$25 for Form 08-475 Statement of Change of Registered Agent/Office, filed with the Division of Corporations. Online filing is available through the Division's corporation portal. Processing typically takes about 3 business days. Most commercial services handle the paperwork for free when you switch your RA to them.

  • What happens if my Alaska LLC's registered agent resigns?

You have 60 days to designate a replacement before the Division of Corporations can begin involuntary dissolution under AS § 10.50.560. Reinstatement costs $100 plus any unpaid biennial report fees ($100 per missed cycle). Alaska's biennial reporting cadence means back-fees can stack across two-year periods rather than annually.

  • Does Alaska's biennial report affect registered agent compliance?

Yes, in a practical sense. Alaska's biennial report ($100, due every two years by January 2) is the main compliance checkpoint, and most commercial RA services use report reminders as their core value-add. A biennial cadence means half the reminder frequency of annual states. Filers using calendar reminders sometimes miss the cycle. A service that tracks Alaska's two-year schedule is worth the $125 per year if compliance discipline isn't your strength.

  • Do I need a registered agent for a Alaska LLC?

Yes. Alaska law requires every LLC to designate a registered agent with a physical street address in Alaska and availability during business hours. There is no exception for inactive or small LLCs. If the LLC loses its registered agent and doesn't designate a replacement within the state's grace period, Alaska begins administrative dissolution of the entity.

  • How much does a registered agent service cost in Alaska?

National services range from $99 per year (ZenBusiness) to $299 per year (Firstbase). The $190 average is close to the market median. Alaska-based local registered agent services also operate in the state, typically pricing between $50 and $150 per year.

  • What happens if my Alaska LLC loses its registered agent?

Alaska gives you 60 days to designate a replacement after the agent resigns or becomes unavailable. Miss the window and Alaska begins administrative dissolution. Reinstatement typically costs $100 plus any unpaid annual report fees.

  • How do I change my registered agent in Alaska?

File Statement of Change - Registered Agent and/or Registered Office (Form 08-475) with Alaska Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing (Corporations Section). The fee is $25. Online filing is accepted. Processing takes about 3 business days. Most formation services handle this paperwork for free when you sign up.

  • Is the registered agent fee tax deductible?

Yes. Registered agent fees are an ordinary and necessary business expense deductible on the LLC's federal tax return (Schedule C, Form 1065, or 1120/1120-S depending on tax treatment). Alaska state tax treatment follows federal on this deduction. Keep the invoices with your tax records.
