Every California LLC is legally required to maintain a registered agent with a physical street address in the state. The role is to receive service of process (lawsuit papers), state tax notices, and other official government mail on the LLC's behalf. Who can serve as a registered agent in California
California allows two categories of registered agent. An individual California resident at least 18 years old with a physical California street address (not a PO box) can serve, provided they're available during business hours to accept service of process. Alternatively, a corporate agent that has filed a Section 1505 Certificate with the Secretary of State under Cal. Corp. Code § 1505 can serve any California entity without a separate per-LLC filing.
The Section 1505 regime is why California has an unusually clean split between individual agents (commonly the LLC's own member, serving from a home or office address) and commercial agents (all major national services have 1505 filings on record). The LLC filing does not list the corporate agent's address; it just names the corporation, and the state looks up the 1505 Certificate to find the current service-of-process address. Choosing the right registered agent in California

If you let your California registered agent lapse
California doesn't set a specific grace period for missing registered agent. Instead, the state enforces compliance through the Statement of Information, which reports the current agent. Miss the Statement of Information and the Secretary of State can suspend or forfeit the LLC under Cal. Corp. Code § 17713.09. A forfeited LLC loses the right to conduct business in the state.
